Animal Aromatics
Zoopharmacognosy refers to the process by which animals self-medicate and naturally forage plants and their essential oils, algae, clay and other natural remedies. This practice allows an animal to use its innate ability to prevent disease.
In a domestic environment they are unable to do this, introducing essential oils (medicinal part of the plant/berry/root etc) to a horse can alleviate a range of physical and emotional problems from pain to wind sucking.
The horse is offered a selection of oils and will select the oils required through inhalation. Those selected oils are then offered to the horse on a daily basis until the horse no longer shows interest. By which time the symptoms/behavioural issues have diminished.
The affect can be immediate and very powerful or longer term and more subtle, each horse is different and will self medicate in there own way. Oils can be used as part of general management from fly sprays to wound management. Remedies are made to suit each horses requirements and can be cheaper and more effective than shop bought products.
